Legend has it that back in the early thirteenth century, the town of Orihuela was invaded by Muslims. In the castle of this town lived the warden Benzaddon with his family. Hermenegilda-Eugenia,
alias "The Armengola", was the nurse of the children of Benzaddon, for
that reason she had free access to the Castle of Orihuela. One
day, the local Mudejar people met with those of the Kingdom of Murcia
to assassinate Christians living in the mozarabia of Arrabal Roig. It was specified that the massacre would take place on 16 July. The Armengola was Christian, but Benzaddon told her his plans to take refuge with the family along with his family.
The Armengola decided to warn of the plans of the warden to the Christian town of the massacre that was going to commit. So on the night of July 16 she disguised two sturdy young men named Aruns and Ruidoms to look like their daughters. In this way, they came to the castle and entered, jabbing at all those who were on the road until they reached Benzaddon. When they murdered him, they took the castle. On the following day, that of the Santas Justas and Rufina, patrons of Orihuela, two stars were placed in the castle in their honor, and also to warn the Oriolan people that it was free.
The next day, July 17, Jaime I of Aragon would finish by throwing the Muslims of Orihuela.
Since then, July 17 is the day that commemorates the feat of this warrior woman and the Reconquest of Orihuela.
