En la época en la que los visigodos eran los habitantes de nuestra querida Orihuela, sobre una de las puertas de la ciudad se veneraba la imagen conocida como María madre de Dios de la Puerta. A su lado, estaba situada la Ermita de San Julián (donde actualmente reside su santuario).

Esta imagen, según cuentan algunas antiguas leyendas fue traída por un discípulo del Apóstol Santiago el Mayor de nombre San Trifón.

Ya en la etapa histórica en la que los árabes se establecieron en nuestros dominios y poco después de que dejara de respetarse el tratado de Teodomiro por parte de los musulmanes, los habitantes de Orihuela por temor a que sus enemigos se hicieran con la imagen venerada decidieron esconderla bajo una campana en la peña oriolana.

Más tarde, durante la reconquista los oriolanos se pusieron sin descanso a la búsqueda de la imagen removiendo y recorriendo toda la sierra oriolana pero sin obtener su premio.

Pasaron los años y llegados al 1306, una campana invisible empezó a sonar allá a lo lejos en la sierra durante tres noches consecutivas.

Un pastor fue al encuentro de tal milagrosa hazaña, subió a la peña y llegó al lugar en donde sonaba con más intensidad. Allí cavó hasta encontrar una cueva y en su interior encontró una campana.

Al levantar esta se quedó mudo y se postró ante los pies de la que hoy conocemos como la Virgen de Monserrate.

La leyenda dice que alzada por dos ángeles para mostrarse a Orihuela tras haber pasado oculta durante siete siglos.

En ese lugar se edificó el actual santuario donde se venera a nuestra patrona.

At the time when the Visigoths were the inhabitants of our beloved Orihuela, on one of the gates of the town was venerated the image known as "Maria Madre de Dios de la Puerta". Next to it, was located the Hermitage of San Julián (where at the moment his sanctuary resides).

This image, according to some ancient legends was brought by a disciple of the Apostle Santiago the Major of name San Trifón.

Already in the historical stage in which the Arabs settled down in our dominions and shortly after the treaty of Teodomiro by the Muslims stopped, the habitants of Orihuela for fear that its enemies were made with the image venerated decided hide it under a bell in the Oriolana rock.

Later, during the reconquest the oriolans put without rest to the search of the image removing and crossing all the Oriolan mountain but without obtaining its prize.

The years passed and arrived in 1306, an invisible bell began to ring there in the distance in the mountains for three consecutive nights.

A shepherd went to meet this miraculous feat, went up to the rock and came to the place where it sounded with more intensity. There he dug until he found a cave and inside he found a bell.

When he got up, he was speechless and prostrated before the feet of what we now know as the Virgin of Monserrate.

The legend says that raised by two angels to show itself to Orihuela after having been hidden for seven centuries.

In that place was built the current sanctuary where our patron saint is venerated.
